About Me
"My creative gift is fueled by a lifelong love of animals, and nature in general. Lines and layers of color detail the wonders of our environment and the creatures who live in it."
My painting career began when I was nine and I lured my Dad’s German Shepherd upstairs to my room. Somehow I made him sit still long enough to paint his portrait. It was pretty lame, but my Dad loved it, and that little oil painting hung on our wall til we all moved on.
And yes, I moved on...to a scientific career, marriage and two sons. Very little time for art, although I took several art history courses while in college. I am one of those creative people who never studied art, I just DID IT. (well, there was a night course in water colors, but my attempts there generally looked pretty much like mud) I was always inspired by the beauty of horses, and also found plenty of subjects of the canine variety. I began adding wildlife to my list of portraits. I spent many hours in the woods hiking, camping, fishing and such, so my experiences provided me with plenty of models. As my work expanded, I found that I much preferred working with pastels over oil paints. Each artist has a favored medium, and pastels are mine. I don’t mind the mess, and I get the effects I want.
Now, my sons are grown and art has come to the forefront of my life. I draw and paint several times a week, even though I have a full time job (as a graphic designer). I have my drawing board in a corner of an upstairs room where I have privacy, and I listen to audio books while covering paper with the faces of our pets and the wild creatures I love. I have still not been to art school, but I find many important lessons in the various publications that I scrutinize carefully, and I learn from the work of others. My skills have expanded, and now I have added landscapes to my repertoire. This is exciting to me, and I keep trying to find more time to paint.
